Ash Tree Flower Buds. This is a disease caused by a fungus called hymenoscyphus fraxineus previously chalara fraxinea. Fraxinus ornus is a medium sized deciduous tree growing to 15 25 m 49 82 ft tall with a trunk up to 1 m diameter.

Distinguishing a male ash tree is a matter of watching for flowers seeds and galls. Watch for the flowers to arrive. The buds are pale pinkish brown to grey brown with a dense covering of short grey hairs.

6 7 normally small purple flowers can be seen clustered in male and female clumps along the branches of the tree as well. The buds are a sooty black with one larger bud at the end of each shoot bracketed by an opposite pair of smaller buds a little further back. The clusters are ash flower galls and do not harm the tree. The ash staminate flower galls remain on the tree for up to two years.
